Teacher Registration

NSW

Anyone who wishes to teach in New South Wales schools must be registered with the Board of Studies Teaching and Educational Standards NSW (BOSTES).

This applies to all teachers including those whose qualifications were completed interstate or overseas, and teachers resuming their career after an absence of five years or more.

For interstate teachers to become accredited with BOSTES you need to have completed a minimum of four years of tertiary study and have been awarded a teaching qualification (i.e., a Bachelor of Education or a bachelor degree and a postgraduate teaching qualification). If you meet this requirement you will be eligible for Provisional Accreditation. The first step is to apply for a conditional or provisional accreditation. Once you have received this post a copy of your current interstate registration to BOSTES.

For eligible Queensland and Western Australian teachers an Applying for Recognition of Queensland Teacher Registration form or Applying for Recognition of WA Teacher Registration form will also need to be provided. Within 2 weeks you will receive a membership card with your new accreditation level.

For overseas teachers you need to have completed a minimum of four years of tertiary study and have been awarded a teaching qualification (i.e., a Bachelor of Education or a bachelor degree and a postgraduate teaching qualification). If you meet this requirement you will be eligible for Provisional Accreditation. If your overseas certification required less years of study or you completed an alternative pathway program to become a teacher, you will be awarded Conditional Accreditation. It will be expected that you undertake additional study to become a fully accredited teacher in NSW

If you completed your overseas certification in a country other than the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, United States, New Zealand or Canada, you will be required to sit an approved English language proficiency test.

For work in NSW Department of Education and Community (DEC) schools the PEAT test is mandatory. Other tests approved by BOSTES include IELTS and ISLPR

For teachers resuming their career after an absence of five years or more is required to apply for provisional or conditional registration. Once you have received this and have commenced teaching you will be required to complete a minimum of 10 hours of QTC Registered Professional Development within 12 months of your Provisional or Conditional Accreditation. Advice about courses available to you will be given when you become provisionally or conditionally accredited

There are two categories of teacher registration in New South Wales, provisional or conditional registration and full registration.

Provisional registration is granted to teachers who have successfully completed an accredited degree. Conditional registration means you have successfully completed at least 3 years of a 4 year teaching degree. You are allowed to work as a teacher while your studies are being completed.

Applying for Full Registration - Proficient Teacher Level

Applying for Full Registration - Proficient Teacher Level

Proficient Teacher Accreditation is a mandatory step which occurs after Provisional or Conditional Accreditation. During a specified timeframe, you must collate evidence which supports your development and demonstrates that you meet the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. Once this has been attained, you must then submit an Accreditation Report. This report is completed by a supervising teacher, mentor or principal once it is proved that you meet the Standards. You must submit annotated evidence to support the report. This is then submitted to the Teacher Accreditation Authority (TAA) who, once having made a decision about your accreditation, then forward it to the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES).
